Bordering Palomas, Chihuahua and located within the historic Village of Columbus, New Mexico, the Columbus port of entry is approximately 30 miles south of Deming and 65 miles west of the Santa Teresa Port of Entry. Visitors to Palomas can drive across the border or park for free in Columbus and walk to Palomas.
Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week the Columbus Port is New Mexico's full service port of entry. The Port is bustling with activity and with many tourists and locals crossing daily.
Traveling south into Mexico, the first stop and often the final destination for most casual tourists is the historic Sister-City of Columbus, New Mexico - Palomas, Mexico. (pop. 5,000)
You may visit a border location such as Palomas, Mexico without obtaining a Mexican tourist permit. If you plan to travel beyond 18 miles into Mexico or if you plan to conduct business in Mexico, you must obtain a permit from an office of the Instituto Nacional de Migracion (Mexican National Immigration Institute) located on the Mexican side of the border port. You must present the following documents to obtain the permit:
1. Birth certificate and driver's license, or
2. U.S. passport

Palomas is popular for tourists and bargain hunters shopping for the many original arts and crafts unique to Mexico. Tens of thousands of U.S. citizens also cross into Palomas in search of dental and optical services or pharmaceuticals which can be obtained for a fraction of the cost found on the U.S. side.
For travelers heading further into Mexico, such as to Ascension, Janos, Chihuahua City, or Casas Grandes, all necessary Mexican agencies are located at the Palomas port. It's a one-stop location to obtain Mexican tourists visas, temporary vehicle permits, and other necessary travel documentation.
Palomas is also known for its many restaurants, some are small authentic-style cafe's where traditional mexican food is served, others like the "Pink Store" restaurant cater more to U.S. citizens.
